If Destination America was a wrestler instead of a cable network, then this would have been an awesome heel turn. I’m talking about a turn on par with Shawn Michaels super kicking Marty Jannetty. With all of the speculation on if the network has decided to cancel TNA or not, Destination America has publicly hit the Sweet Chin Music on TNA and thrown them through a glass window by picking up Ring of Honor. Not only will they air the well known wrestling promotion, it will premiere as early as next week acording to their press report. And while the network is currently stating that ROH and TNA will act as a one-two punch of Wednesday night professional wrestling, it’s clear that ROH is more than likely being tried out as an eventual replacement for TNA if the unaddressed rumors turn out to be true. Here is the official press statement released by Destination America.
“Destination America announced today that it has signed a national broadcast deal with professional wrestling league RING OF HONOR, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc., bringing one of the most respected wrestling organizations to the only network dedicated to all-American entertainment. Destination America is now the one-two-punch to professional wrestling, adding RING OF HONOR (ROH) to its line-up after launching IMPACT WRESTLING in early 2015.
RING OF HONOR has been delivering top wrestling matches for ten years with captivating hard-hitting stars such as Jay & Mark Briscoe, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, The Young Bucks, Maria Kanellis, Adam Cole and Jay Lethal. Destination America will pack on the action beginning Wednesday June 3 with the series premiere of RING OF HONOR at 8/7c leading into brand new premieres of IMPACT WRESTLING at 9/8c.
While the two shows may occupy the same night together, it would be nothing for ROH to simply expand in to a two hour show if the TNA rumors turn out to be true. I’m not against TNA and wish them the best, but the promotion has not officially commented on their status with the network. It seems like the promotion is going through a difficult time right now and have avoided clearing up their current television status. But as unfortunate as it was for Marty Jannetty, the severed ties of a partnership catapulted Shawn Michaels to stardom. Maybe a move like this will take Destination America closer to their goal of becoming a place for wrestling fans to tune in to for an alternative to mainstream wrestling.
