News was just released that former Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin has been cast as Superman in the second season of Supergirl. Set to make an appearance in the first two episodes of the season, this will mark the first time the Man of Steel has appeared on CW television since Smallville. Tom Welling, who portrayed Clark Kent on Smallville, was a fan favorite for the role. But it seems like his busy schedule with his new show, along with Supergirl showrunners wanting to work with Tyler on a future project, has lead to a new face for Kal-El. But despite the disappointment over Tom not reprising his role, Tyler definitely looks the part as far as casting goes.

Superman making his debut on Supergirl is a huge deal for many reasons. It was once believed that Warner Bros. were focused on keeping their DC characters on film separate from the DC television universe as much as possible. The Suicide Squad and Amanda Waller were written off television just in time before the marketing of the Suicide Squad film picked up. So the fact that there will be a big and small screen version of the Man of Steel opens the doors for other characters to make their way to The CW’s Arrowverse. We will have to wait and see how things play out in the future, but the official casting of Superman for Supergirl is a huge step in the right direction for DC television.
